About FAGNA®

Our Story

From a single LinkedIn community to a global movement — discover the journey that shaped the Female Academics Global Network Association.

From a LinkedIn Community to a Global Movement

The story of the Female Academics Global Network Association (FAGNA®) began with a simple but powerful vision: to create a supportive global community where female academics could connect, collaborate, grow, and thrive.

In March 2021, while based in Switzerland, our Founder launched Female Academics Global as a LinkedIn networking initiative designed to bring together women in academia from different countries, disciplines, and career stages. What started as a modest online community quickly resonated with female scholars, researchers, educators, and academic leaders across the world.

As the community grew, so did its impact. Female academics from universities, research institutions, government agencies, and industry joined the network to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, exchange opportunities, and build meaningful professional relationships. The platform became a space where women could find encouragement, visibility, mentorship, and a sense of belonging within the global academic landscape.

Over the next four years, Female Academics Global experienced remarkable growth. By 2025, the network had connected with more than 30,000 female academics and supporters worldwide, representing over 100 countries and a wide range of academic disciplines. Through regular engagement, professional discussions, knowledge sharing, and advocacy for women in academia, the network evolved into a vibrant international community with a shared commitment to excellence, inclusion, leadership, and impact.

As the community expanded, it became increasingly clear that a more formal structure was needed to support its growing ambitions and global reach. Members and supporters envisioned an organization that could go beyond networking to provide leadership development, mentoring, research collaboration, advocacy, capacity building, and international partnerships.

This vision became a reality in February 2026 when the organization was formally registered in Sweden as the Female Academics Global Network Association (FAGNA®), a nonprofit association dedicated to empowering female academics worldwide.

The establishment of FAGNA® marked an important milestone in our journey. With a formally constituted Board of Directors and an international Advisory Board, the organization entered a new chapter—one focused on building sustainable programs, expanding global partnerships, strengthening professional development opportunities, and creating lasting impact for women in academia.

Today, FAGNA® serves as a global platform that connects, empowers, and advances female academics through networking, leadership development, mentoring, advocacy, research collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives. Through flagship initiatives such as the Leadership Excellence and Academic Development Institute (LEAD Institute) and Female Academics Without Borders (FAWiB), we continue to create opportunities for women to lead, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society.

While much has been achieved since 2021, we believe that our journey is only beginning. Guided by our vision and strengthened by our growing global community, we remain committed to building a future where female academics everywhere are empowered to reach their full potential and make a transformative impact in their institutions, communities, and the world.

From one LinkedIn community to a global association, our story is ultimately a story of connection, empowerment, leadership, and possibility.
